Misdemeanor and Felony Theft Charges
Larceny can be classified as a misdemeanor or felony depending on the retail value of the money or property involved. As the financial amount increases, so do the consequences for conviction.
- Misdemeanor larceny: Theft involving a retail value up to $1000 will result in misdemeanor larceny charges (theft in the 6th degree, 5th degree, 4th degree) with a potential sentence of 90 days to 1 year in jail.
- Felony larceny: Theft involving a retail value above $1000 will result in felony larceny charges (theft in the 3rd degree, 2nd degree, 1st degree) with a potential sentence ranging from 1 year to 20 years in prison.
Regardless of the larceny/theft charges you are facing, you should consult with a skilled defense lawyer to discuss your rights and the defense strategies available. Contact Attorney Brian J. Woolf for a free initial consultation.
